You know as a writer that you’re onto something good when you ‘need’ to write about it but fear that you will spread the word and spoil the unique, quiet, peaceful environment that frankly you ‘want’ to keep for yourself!
This is a review of one such gem and fortunately for us, dear reader, the rules around this stunning camping site in Dorset dictate that only five of us keen campers can visit at any one time – so fear not, you too can have a little piece of paradise – but only if you are a member of the Caravan and Motorhome Club!
To some this membership may conjure up visions of snail speed caravans and older guests shushing any fun that may be had on site – but oh how the times have changed.
Particularly since lockdown camping is so very ‘in’!
Enjoy-It HQ itself invested in an office on wheels during lockdown in the form of a VW T5, and indeed a good proportion of this magazine has been written from a hill in Osmington Mills overlooking Weymouth Bay and Portland Harbour from that very office!
Isle View Campsite is a find! It was a recommendation from a friend in 2022, and I finally got the time to visit this summer and once settled there, spent seven nights out of 11 in this beautiful oasis of Dorset countryside with access to one of the most secluded, long and white cliff- lined beaches that I have ever swum from.
It is a family run Certified Location campsite that has been welcoming campervan, caravan and motorhome guests since 2012, set within a five-acre piece of land, and fenced off at the pinnacle of the field are five pristine allocated pitches, each with the same priceless view and plenty of room for privacy and seclusion.
Proprietors Karl and charming partner Dani are at hand. And my, they do a superb job!
The site is exceptionally well manicured and the basic of amenities are clean and clearly marked.
Booking is a dream as Dani is so on the ball – she is prompt to reply, full of local knowledge and makes a great effort to visit the site daily to chat to those that are on site and not walking, running, swimming, sightseeing or out with their dogs! It is no wonder a good proportion of guests are returning time and again.
A code locked gate off a private road leads campers to the gated and fenced access to the campsite – situated within 300m of the Jurassic Coastal Path! 500m to a 100m zig zag path down to the beach. Within 5km of Weymouth to the west and just over 1km to the ‘infamous
of old’ Smuggler’s Inn to the east! With a lovely farm shop just a short walking distance, what more could one ask for?
Mornings of scampers and swims to the east or west
for as long as one cares – days overlooking the Bay and evenings on the beach followed by home cooked dinner on a campfire...
Personally, I would question whether there is a campsite in the land that has such views, tranquillity or adventure potential?
From the site enjoy the impressive view of tankers and liners anchoring in the bay or mooring up in Portland Harbour, their navigation lights reflecting off the water at night, the moon rising over the horizon as one sits by the campfire, and the skylarks darting through the fields by day, this is what dreams are made of!
Isle View Campsite has a warm welcome thanks to that family-run feeling, it is immaculate, and I shall make it my second home for as long as the season lasts.
It is open to members from April to October with weather on our side.
